What Really Causes Cavities
Did you know that you have whole communitiesof microbes living in your mouth right now? And if you don't treat them right.they'llmake holes in your teeth. I'm Anna Rothschild, and this is Gross Science. No matter how much you brush, your mouth isfilled with microbes. Thousands of bacteria live on every single one of your teethâ€”andthat's if you have excellent oral hygiene! You may even have some fungi and amoebas inthere, too. Which microbes are present changes all thetime, based on, say, who you're dating. We swap something like 80 million bacteriawith every 10secondlong French kiss, and
couples who live together tend to have similarmicrobes on their tongues. That said, there is what scientists call your â€œcore microbiome.â€�That's the 150ish different species of microbes living in most people's mouths. Now, lots of these guys are totally harmlessâ€”andsome are even helpful. For example, some microbes help keep you from getting thrush, which isa yeast infection of the mouth. Increasingly, we're learning that to havea healthy mouth we need healthy microbes, as well. In fact, cavities are a good exampleof what can happen when the balance of microbes in your mouth gets out of whack.
Many of the microbes living on your teethform something called â€œplaque,â€� and in small quantities, these guys can be our friends.Plaque is what's called a â€œbiofilmâ€�â€”essentially a community of different microbes that allstick to a surfaceâ€”in this case, your teeth. The crazy thing is that these different microbestalk to each other, passing molecular signals back and forth, and swapping genetic materialto keep on growing. Eventually, the community even develops what you could think of as acirculatory system to transfer water and nutrients. And speaking of nutrients, the microbes inthese biofilms need to eat, and one thing some of them really love is sugar. So, whenyou suck on a lollipop, you're not the only
one getting a tasty treat. After their meal,these candy and sodahungry microbes release acid as a waste product. And that acid iswhat pulls out the minerals in your teeth, eventually causing cavities. Now, if you stop eating sugary foods and cleanoff the plaque by brushing, your teeth have a chance to recover. But if, for example,you drink soda all the time, the bacteria just produce more and more acid, which notonly causes cavities, but could actually kill off some of the other, good microbes hangingaround. And as the balance of bacteria in your mouth changes, you could get even moretooth decay and other dental problems.
So what can you do about it? Don't eat toomany sugary foods, remember to brush and floss, and get regular cleanings from your dentist.Cause we need to keep our communities of microbes happy and healthy. Ew.

to any sort of product sweetener. Even mostpackaged products and fast foods are also high in sugar. Even things like pasta saucesand crackers, you'd be surprised, but sugar is added to almost everything. So again, eliminate especially the processedsugar out of your diet. As a replacement, I recommend using a little bit of Stevia,which is a nocalorie natural sweetener and then about one to three teaspoons a day ofmanuka honey. Okay? Those are the sweeteners you should be using if you have Candida. Number two. You need to eliminate grains fromyour diet. Why? Because grains turn into sugar
and they also tend to be more inflammatory.And so again, getting those grains out of your diet, especially wheat products and glutencontaininggrains, that's step number two. Instead, do a lot more vegetables and maybe some starchycarbs. Number three thing you have to do to clearCandida from you system, is support your spleen. Now, this is cuttingedge information thata lot of people don't realize. And this is a practice in Ancient China that is oftenused by acupuncturists today. But they have found that the number one cause of Candidais a weakened spleen. And so if you have spleen issues, and spleen is responsible for digestionof the body, producing red blood cells in
your system. And so the spleen is a very importantorgan. In order to support the spleen, there area couple things you need to do. But really the spleen is supported by starchy foods,especially squash, things like sweet potatoes, butternut squash, and also even doing certaintypes of beans like lentils and mung beans. So again, getting some of those good starchycarbs. And that's really where your sweetness shouldcome from. A little bit of butternut squash, acorn squash, foods like that that has thatmild sweetness.
