I'm going to talk about coffee today. A nicecup of coffee. I'm just reading a Candida website, quitea wellknown one, here on my other computer. Do not drink coffee. Caffeine can cause yourblood sugar to rise, weakens your adrenals, and can impair your immune system. Coffeecontains molds. Even decaf coffee should be avoided because they contain residual levelsof caffeine. Well, I'll drink to that. What a load of crap! There's nothing wrong withdrinking coffee if you use your head.

I have got no problem with most people drinkingone or two cups of coffee a day. But I'll tell you the best time to drink coffee andthat's in the morning. Why would that be? Why not drink it in the afternoon? Why notdrink it before bed? Why not drink pots of coffee all day? Well, coffee does containcaffeine. There is nothing wrong with giving yourself a boost in the morning when yourcortisol levels are naturally high. Early coffee consumption is actually beneficialfor the body. It's quite good to drink coffee. Not lots and lots of cups of coffee.People who tell you to strictly avoid this and strictly avoid that. To me, they're likereligious fanatics. Don't listen to this crap.

But this nonsense about quot;thou shalt not do this, thou shaltnot do that,quot; just be careful that you don't fall into this religious fanatical trap whereyou limit all caffeine in your life because you think it'll make you better. I don't thinkit makes much difference at all. In fact, the more you limit these things and the lessyou enjoy what you're eating and drinking,

the more prone you are to having outbreaksof wanting lots of chocolate and lots of sweet foods and lots of alcohol. This creates abinging situation for you. Allowing you small amounts of coffee continuallyover a long period of time is generally okay. Don't put sugar in your coffee. And if you have a good look on the internet on YouTube or on blog sites, everythingis food, food, food. There are recipes for healthy eating. There's gluten free. There'sthe SBD diet. The Gaps diet. The Body Ecology diet. There is diet, diet, diet overload.And if it's not that, then we're going to get a lot of other kinds of information likeexercise overload, weight loss overload. And

a lot of people then come out and say, quot;Oh,but you're the fun police. We can't do this and we can't do that.quot; We hear this quiteroutinely. My role as a naturopath is not really to stoppeople from enjoying life, but it's to help them balance their lifestyle. If you're notreally getting well and you've been sick for many years, there could be a couple of reasonsfor this. And one of the classic reasons I find with a lot of patients is they're notreally looking at the causes. They're not looking at the thing that started the problemgoing properly, and they're not looking at the things that keep it maintaining or keepit going on and on and on.

Sometimes, the best advice I've given a patientis you need to quit your job. You need to quit your relationship. You need to quit theway that you think about things. Not about, quot;Does the food I eat contain such and sucha level of pesticide or should I live in a property away from a mobile phone tower,quot;or crap like this. Quite often, in my opinion, this may not be your opinion, but many peopleneed an attitude adjustment. The screw needs either turning in or turning out, so adjustmentsneed to be made according to how you think and how you live your life.Good health comes from a balance. It comes from eating good food. We know that it comesfrom exercising, walking, and doing things

like that regularly. It comes from havinggood sleep patterns, but it also comes a lot from good emotional patterns like balancedrelationships we have with people around us. People that we like. People that we care about.These things are very important to me. I had a recent consultation with an IT technicianwho had a lot of issues, a really lovely guy. And he said, quot;Eric, the best advice you gaveme really was to start going to bed earlier. Was to stop working beyond the fatigue. Iget tired, but I keep on working.quot; And this man has lost a bit of weight as a result,and he's feeling a lot happier. That's making him more confident to make changes in otherareas of his life.

Maybe it's not about what you eat. And ifit is about what you eat, often there will one or two foods primarily that are causingyou grief. In this gentleman's case, it was potato chips. He likes to eat potato chipsat night. I said, quot;Is it any wonder you weigh 250 pounds. You've got to give the potatochips up.quot; Common sense. Another patient I had from the UK last weekwith chronic insomnia. This patient just couldn't sleep, and she's had a sleeping problem forquite a few years and she's been to about 30 practitioners about it. And the one pieceof information she got from me that made the change was to stop drinking that one cup oftea a day. She claimed that she was only having

one cup, maybe two cups of tea, per day. InEngland, they drink tea. In America, they like coffee. I don't carehow minimal a quantity of caffeine you have in your life, if you have any kind of sleepingproblem, you need to give up on caffeine for at least a month or two to see if there'sany link between the smallest amount of caffeine and your sleeping disturbance. And you mightbe quite surprised. One cup of tea per day can be enough to keep you from sleeping soundly.I know a lot of people drink way more than one cup of coffee or tea per day.I don't care how clean your diet is or how much you exercise, if you don't follow thebasic laws of nature like a cup of tea, caffeine
